About the Speech: On 22 May 2013 the European Council identified its main future priority for energy, the completion of the single market for energy. To achieve this aim the European Commission has been promoting a Target Model for Electricity Markets. Despite this promotion, issues persist with the model, and its compatibility with the EU's renewable energy policy. These issues were considered by Malcolm Keay, Senior Research Fellow Oxford Institute for Energy Studies in his address, on Monday, 9 September 2013 at 12.45p.m. About the Speaker: Malcolm Keay has been a Senior Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies since January 2005. Before this he held a number of High-Level positions across the energy sector, including Director of Energy Policy at the UK DTI, Division Head at the International Energy Agency, and Senior Managing Consultant at Oxera. The IIEA wishes to acknowledge the kind support of its Foundation member, ESB, for this event. - See more at: http://www.iiea.com/events/europes-energy-and-climate-policies--coming-apart-at-the-seams#sthash.YUKN63Wj.dpuf

The destruction of middle class wealth in parts of the eurozone under current economic policies has parallels with the pre-World War II era that ushered in economic collapse, followed by extreme politics, says Wharton finance professor Franklin Allen. Debt monetizing policies by the European Central Bank and the Fed may also reduce competitiveness against China, India and other emerging economies.
